This week, I’m thrilled to publish a photo essay from one of my favorite photographers and people, Matt Gibson. His words and photos are below.
Matt Gibson is a photographer and videographer based in Pinehurst, North Carolina. He previously worked at Golf Channel and the PGA TOUR. For more of his work, follow him on Instagram or visit his website.
Someone asks me are you bringing your camera to Scotland? The truth is I now rarely leave the house without one.
I reply I am really excited to bring my camera out there. For work I take a lot of photos or I do freelance work where I am taking photos for a client. There’s always a nagging sensation in the back of my head asking whether or not they’ll like what I’ve done. Will they like the colors, the light, the composition? I am excited to take photos for myself. There are no deliverables, I have nobody to answer to. I can do whatever I want and nobody is going to tell me that it’s right or wrong.
I look at the stills and they are mine.
Each tells a story in my head. Perhaps the landscape looks similar but I remember different feelings when I stare at a different moment in time.
This is the photo I took when we climbed a mountain.
This is the photo when we pulled off to the side of the road because I saw a rainbow.
I look at them and I feel free.
To do whatever I want, shoot however I want, edit however I want.
I look at them and I love them.
If you do too, that's great. If you don't, that's also great.
